2003 Fiordland 7.2MW

The Mw 7.2 (6.989ML) Fiordland earthquake of August 21 2003 at 12:12:49.9 UTC was the largest shallow earthquake to occur in New Zealand for 35 years. Because of its location in an unpopulated area, it caused only minor damage to buildings, roads and infrastructure in Otago and Southland. It triggered numerous landslides on steep slopes in the epicentral region, where intensities reached MM9. More than 200 landslides were observed and minor damage occurred to park infrastructure in Fiordland National Park.

The fall of one landslide into Charles Sound caused a small local tsunami that reached a maximum of 4–5 m above high tide mark on the opposite shore. A small tsunami was also generated on the Tasman Sea coast, which was recorded on tide gauges at Jackson Bay (300 mm peak-to-trough) 190 km northeast of the epicentre, and at Port Kembla (170 mm peak-to-trough) on the east coast of Australia.
Felt as far north as Wellington on the North Island. Also felt at Sydney, New South Wales and Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

There were 6365 aftershocks in the following 30 days up to the 21st September, and a further 1353 to the end of 2003 including 34 four plus magnitude and one 5.181ML
Two hours after the main event there was a a 6.14ML strong aftershock and another large 6.001ML on the 4th September.
In the 30 days following there were 17 aftershocks between 5.003ML and 5.883ML, nine within the first 40 minutes;
226 aftershocks between 4.00ML and 4.985ML (31 within the first 40 minutes);
1299 aftershocks between 3.00ML and 3.999ML;
3879 aftershocks between 2.00ML and 2.998ML;
and 931 aftershocks between 1.016ML and 1.999ML.

1995 East Cape 7.0
The 1995 (February 5) Waitangi Day sequence, offshore East Cape, began with a magnitude 7.0 mainshock at 22:51:02 UTC at a depth of 12km and was followed by 696 aftershocks events 2.84 - 5.99ML within the first 24 hours of the main rupture.

Over the next three weeks a prolific aftershock sequence continued in the outer rise and trench of the Hikurangi margin on the north western face of the Ruatoria undersea debris avalanche of c. 170,000 years ago.
The sequence, to the end of 1995 consisted of ;

1995 Cass 6.3
On 1995 November 24th 06:18:57 UTC, an earthquake of moment magnitude Mw 6.2 (6.289ML) struck at a depth of 7.26km near the small settlement of Cass on the Arthur's Pass road which crosses the Southern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand.
The earthquake was felt as far away as Blenheim in the north of the South Island and Timaru to the south. There were 1125 aftershocks within the next 30 days.
The formal location is 30 km ENE of the location of the 1994 Arthur's Pass earthquake, 20 km SSW of the 1929 Arthur's Pass epicentre, and 38 km southeast of the Alpine Fault.
The Cass Mw 6.2 earthquake had an oblique reverse focal mechanism with an approximately north-south fault plane dipping at 45° to the west.
Early aftershocks (first 3 hrs) occurred mainly to the south of the mainshock location, supporting the possibility of a south-rupturing mainshock.
In the first 3hrs there were 234 aftershocks;
13 aftershocks between 1.705ML and 1.993ML
162 aftershocks bewteen 2.016ML and 2.985ML
57 aftershocks between 3.0ML and 3.974ML
and one at 4.043ML and one at 4.093ML

The 6.3ML main shock caused some ground movement in the remote Poulter River area, and at Arthur’s Pass, Cass and Mt White Station. The earthquake brought down lots of loose rocks onto screes in the area.

The largest aftershock of the earthquake, a 5.187ML, at a depth of 5.59km occurred about 26 hours later, 2.8km to the NNE of the mainshock.
From the time of the mainshock and the 5.2 there were 345 aftershocks between 1.214ML and 3.92ML.
Over the next 29 days there were;
87 aftershocks between 1.283ML and 1.991ML
401 aftershocks between 2.0ML and 2.992ML

1994 Arthurs Pass 6.7:
The 18 June 1994 Arthur's Pass earthquake (Mw 6.7)at 03:25::14 UTC occurred in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, 10km SW of Arthurs Pass and 1.5 km S of the Waimakariri River at a depth of 4.3km.
Surface deformation caused by the earthquake was a maximum horizontal station displacement of c. 50 cm.
More than 10,661 aftershocks were recorded in 32 days following the earthquake.
Moderate strength aftershocks were centred 19km to the south around Mt Gragarus/ Harper Fault area, there were 8 aftershock quakes >5.0, with the largest a 6.1 , on 19/06/1994 at 13:43:52 UTC and 5km deep, 2km S of The Spurs, 2km NW of Mt. Gragarus, 5.5km E Wilberforce River, 7.7km N Lake Coleridge

In the 45 hours after the intial earthquake there were
5 aftershocks between 5.032ML and 5.184ML,
64 aftershocks between 4.001MLand 4.784ML (21 of them within the first half hour) ,
577 aftershocks between 3.0ML and 3.982ML,
1119 aftershocks betwen 2.0ML and 2.999ML and
94 aftershocks between 1.125ML and 1.999ML.

1994 Arthur's Pass earthquake was the largest earthquake on land in New Zealand since 1968.
The earthquake was notable for the strength of shaking recorded at Arthur's Pass Township and for the little damage it caused to bridges and houses.
The most serious damage occurred in the Upper Otira Gorge where a large (5-10,000 m3) rock slide covered the road and partially dammed the Otira River. Other damage affecting the highway consisted of debris and rockfalls, and slumping along the edge of poorly compacted fills.

In Arthur’s Pass the tremors damaged buildings, broke crockery, spilled food, and knocked over televisions and vidoes. In Otira Gorge two men had a narrow escape when two huge boulders fell onto the road, missing their truck by just a few metres. State Highway 73 was closed because of cracks, slips and rockfalls. In Christchurch buildings swayed and many people fled into the streets.

The Arthur's Pass earthquake itself was a primarily reverse event, but the majority of the aftershocks, including the largest, were strike-slip.
The aftershock distribution of the MW 6.7, is unusual for a reverse faulting event in that it extends 12 km NNW and 30 km SSE of the actual fault plane, which strikes NE-SW.

In the 28 days following that (20th June to 18th July) there were a further
4338 aftershocks bewteen 1.002ML and 1.999ML
4170 aftershocks between 2.0ML and 2.998ML
271 aftershocks between 3.001ML and 3.986ML

1993 Secretary Island 6.8
On 10 August 1993, at 00:51:52 UTC a large MW 6.8 earthquake occurred off the coast of Fiordland, c. 10 km west of Secretary Island at a depth of 5km.
Shaking from the event reached intensity MM8 on Secretary Island and in Doubtful Sound, and the earthquake was felt from Auckland to Stewart Island, and even as far away as Sydney, Australia.
The highest reported intensities of MM 8 were received from the nearby township of Te Anau. The quake triggered widespread minor landslides in the mountains between Doubtful Sound and Manapouri, and a ~0.6 m tsunami on parts of the coast.
From the time of the mainshock until the end of August 1993, 3853 aftershocks were recorded within a radius of 50-70km from the epicentre. There were 9 events between 5.104ML to 5.626, 183 events between 4.0ML and 4.953ML, 1103 events between 3.0ML and 3.999ML, 2180 events between 2.0ML and 2.998ML and 377 events between 0.968ML and 1.999ML.
This was the largest shallow earthquake to occur in New Zealand for 25 years, and the largest event in Fiordland since the MW 6.9 earthquake of 1938 December 16, which occurred near Charles Sound.
It is speculated by geologists that due to the proximity in space and time to the MW 6.4 Doubtful Sound earthquake of 1989 May 31, that the August 10 1993 6.3 may have been triggered by the prior event.
Aftershocks continued through to the end of 1993 with 962 more events recorded, the largest a 5.106ML on the 1st November at 06:02:59 UTC, 12km deep, 6.7km south west of the 10th August mainshock.

1993 Ormond 6.3

Also on 10 August 1993, a shallow ML 6.3 earthquake occurred near the small settlement of Ormond in the Gisborne region.It was widely felt in the eastern part of the North Island and in the northern South Island.
Reported intensities reached MM8 near Waipaoa, and intensities of MM7 were apparent between Ormond and Te Karaka, where soil liquefaction occurred on the Waipaoa River flats, and some natural slopes failed.
175 aftershocks were recorded to the end of August 30th 1993.
There were 5 events 4.011ML to 4.678ML, 70 events 3.005ML to 3.948ML,
and 98 events 1.829ML to 2.989ML

1992 Wairau 6.8:
The largest magnitude earthquake on land in 1992 occured at 22:30:36 UTC on the 27th May at a depth of 79km. There are no records of any damage, despite the size of the quake at 6.75ML It was located 8.5km S of the Wairau River between the Waihopai and Marchburn Rivers, 26.4km WSW of Blenheim.The number of aftershocks was small, the largest being a 3.857ML on the 29th May at 14:06:15 UTC . In total there were only 10 aftershocks in the following 30 days, 2 at 3.1ML ( and the 3.8) and 6 between 2.37ML and 2.973ML.

1992 Weber 4
Another notable event of 1992 was the "Weber 4" 5.7ML on 1992-03-02 09:05:57 UTC, the 4th event in a sequence starting on February 19, 1990, with a 5.9ML ( Mw 6.2). The second event, May 13, 1990 a 6.2ML(6.4Mw), and the 3rd event August 15, 1990 a 5.7ML.

The Weber 4 earthquake epicentre was closer to the coast than the previous 3 quakes, it was 7.2km east of Weber 3 at a depth of 37km.

There were 406 aftershocks in the 30 days following, the largest a 5.016ML event on the 13th March at Lat -40.26044 Long. 176.49117, 21.07km to the north west of the main shock. There were 138 aftershocks from 1.004ML to 2.819 in the immediate area of the mainshock, the remaining 268 aftershocks spread in two main areas in a SW to NE direction, one near the 1990 Weber 3 earthquake and the others 20 km north east of Weber village. Of those there were 2 aftershocks 4.216ML and 4.392ML, 17 between 3.004ML and 3.976ML 186 events 2.005ML to 2.993ML and 62 events 0.453ML to 1.989ML

1991 Westport Earthquake Swarm (Hawks Crag)
Hawks Crag 1:
On 28th January 1991 at 12:58:48 UTC a strong 6.134ML earthquake occured at a depth of 9.9km below the eastern flanks of Buckland Peaks, Paparoa Mt. Range, 17km (10.5miles) south south east of Westport, Westland , on the north west coast of the South Island. The epicenter (Lat -41.90, Long 171.66) was 10.8km (6.7 miles) south west of Hawks Crag on the Buller River and 2.7 km (1.7miles) west of the Ohikanui River and became known as the Hawks Crag 1 earthquake.
During the next five hours there were 197 aftershocks.
The area of aftershocks covered 6.2km to the east to 12 km to the west, 6.5km to the north but only 1.4km to the south. A large percentage (155) of the aftershocks occured at one location, Lat -41.89, Long 171.61 on the western flanks of Buckland Peaks 4.3km west of the main shock.
There were 2 aftershocks at 4.024ML / 11km deep and 4.028ML/10.4km deep, 13 events between 3.061 and 3.84 at depths bewteen 8km and 11.4km, 74 events between 2.012ML and 2.97ML, at depths between 6.3km and 12.9km. There were 107 events between 0.69ML and 1.994ML, all occuring at the -41.89, 171.61 location and at a depth of 8.2km.
Hawks Crag 2:
At 18:00:54 UTC a second stronger 6.286ML event occured 5.7km (3.6 miles) to the east of the first earthquake, in the Ohikaiti River Valley at a depth of 9.9km, this became known as the Hawks Crag 2 earthquake. In the next 16 days there were 1148 aftershocks, 631 of them within 600 metres of the main event at an average depth of 17km , the rest scattered on the eastern side of the Ohikanui River valley and further east as far as the Inangahua River. There were 5 quakes between 4.022ML and 4.608ML , 43 events between 3,001ML and 3.96ML, 244 quakes between 2.001ML and 2.989ML, and 855 events between 0.101ML and 1.995ML
During this 16 day period there were 148 aftershocks at the -41.89, 171.61location at the headwaters of the Totara River, at a depth of 8.2km, but these were likely related to the first 6.134ML main quake at 12:58:48 UTC 28th January.and 132 of those were less than Mag 1.995ML.
News Item (January 1991):
Liquefaction at: Nine Mile Beach, north of Charleston, sand boils and cracks along beach. Subsidence of beach, especially around large driftwood logs, leaving the logs perched on pedestals of sand.
Hawks Crag 3:
On the 15th February a 3rd strong earthquake occured 17km ( 10.5 miles) south of the previous 2 strong quakes, 2km (1.23 miles south west of Mt. Faraday). In the first 13 hrs after the earthquake there were 168 aftershocks within a radius of 5km to the north, 3 km to the south 10km to the est and 15km to the east of magnitude 0.938ML to 4.568ML, 122 of these occuring at Lat -42.0299, Long 171.58, a depth of 6.4km, 1.23km to the north west of the main shock at a depth of 6.4km.
A further 95 aftershocks continued to the end of February, the largest being a 5.079ML on the 24th Feb at 00:50:34 UTC at -42.04652, Long 171.57199.
Also through to the end of February there were 52 more aftershocks in the Hawks Crag 1 & 2 locations between Lat -41.86654 and -41.93737, the largest being a 3.838ML.
Aftershocks continued for the next 12 months in the area, 112 in total, the largest being a 4.245ML on the 1st May 1991 at Lat -41.9278, Long 171.7358.

Weber 1,2 ,3 Swarm:
A series of four large earthquakes with epicenters very close to one another occurred in 1990–1992 in the Weber region of the southeast coast of the North Island. The region is one of oblique plate convergence and subduction, the plate interface being at about 20 km depth.
The first event in the Weber sequence was the M6.2 Weber I in Feb. 1990, which faulted the plate slab steeply down to the northwest. That was followed 3 months later by the M6.4 Weber II event, which was a southeast-directed thrust entirely above the plate interface.

The first event, on February 19, 1990 at 05:34:37 UTC, a 5.944ML, 6.2Mw, at a depth of 33.8km, occurred within the upper part of the subducting Pacific plate on a steeply northwest dipping normal fault, as defined by relocated aftershocks. .The time history of the aftershocks of the first (deeper) event shows a period of quiescence beginning 35 days before the second (shallow) event in May.
Between the main shock on the 19th February and the 2nd event on the 13th May in the approx. 50km radius triangular area between Dannevirke in the north west, Pourerere in the north east and Owahanga in the south there were 1354 aftershocks, 7 between 4.016ML and 4.899ML , 111 between 3.001ML and 3.989ML, 872 between 2.002ML and 2.992ML and 363 between 1.209ML and 1.999ML. The majority of the smaller aftershocks were 4-16km northwest of Weber or 15-22km north west of the main shock., although there were approx. 23 events further to the west 14-15km east of Ekatahuna running in a north south line north of Alfredton, including a 4.553ML.

Weber2:
The second event, May 13, 1990, 6.2ML, 6.5Ms, 6.4 Mw, occurred on an imbricate fault in the overlying Australian plate, dipping shallowly northwest, with components of both thrusting and dextral strike-slip motion. It was located 5.41km (3.4 miles) north east of the February Weber 1 event at a depth of 30km.
There were 441 aftershocks in the first 24 hours, the largest being a 5.055ML 17.6km to the north west, at a depth of 26.4km, subsequent to and 3 minutes after the mainshock, and 29 events between 4.003ML and 4.791ML by August 1st, 22 of them in the first 16 hours.
Through till 15th August 1990 there were 235 aftershocks between 3.0ML and 3.969ML, 718 events 2.003ML to 2.994ML and 563 events 0.357ML to 1.995ML. In total there were 1546 aftershocks before the Weber 3 5.7ML struck on 15th August 1990.
It appears that the first earthquake (Weber 1) , in the lower plate, produced additional loading that induced the second. This interactive relationship is also evident in the aftershocks of the May event, many of which were located near to the Feb 19 hypocentre.

News Item 13 May 1990 Weber II earthquake:
At 4:23 pm on Mother’s Day, 13 May 1990, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the southern Hawke’s Bay near Weber, east of Dannevirke. It was just 10 kilometres from the epicentre of a magnitude 6.1 Mwearthquake on 19 February, a few months earlier. Some houses were cracked, or knocked off their foundations. Many buildings in Dannevirke had broken windows and cracked chimneys. At Cape Kidnappers, a group of about ten people walking along the shore had a near miss when a large slip from the coastal cliffs fell near them. Within 24 hours of the main earthquake, there were 7 aftershocks of magnitude 5 Mw or greater.

Weber 3:
The third smaller Weber 3 earthquake occured on August 15, 1990 at 15:54:43.4 UTC, was a 5.7ML, 4.8Ms, 5.17Mw at a depth of 41.7km and extended the aftershock zone of the deeper first main shock to the northeast, matching the extent of the shallower second 6.2ML Weber 2 shock. In the 122 days following, to the end of 1990, there were 4 aftershocks 4.062ML to 4.777ML, 45 events 3.001ML to 3.937ML, 285 events 2.012ML to 2.995ML and 21 events 1.662ML to 1.981ML.

Weber 1991 - Weber 4:
From the beginning of Jan 1991 in the 14 months through to 1st March 1992 the area was relatively light with earthquake activity, with only 351 total events, 4 from 4.205ML to 4.381ML, 65 from 3.015ML to 3.92ML, 278 from 2.044ML to 2.999ML and 3 at 1.921ML, 1.969ML and 1.977ML
The next strong event in the Weber sequence, Weber 4 occured on 1992 March 2nd 09:05:57 UTC. It was a 5.745ML.

1990 Lake Tennyson 5.8:

The Lake Tennyson 5.8ML, (6.04 Ms, 5.93Mw ) earthquake of 1990 Feb 10 at 03:27:41.9 UTC at a depth of 12.67km was located in an isolated area between two major active strike-slip faults: the Clarence and Awatere Faults No surface rupture has been reported.
Aftershock locations appeared to be spread over a large area between the Fowlers Fault and the Awatere Fault, with the more precisely located events defining an elongate zone, about 12 km long, parallel to the local trend of the Awatere Fault.
27 minutes after the main earthquake there was a moderate 5.456ML aftershock 5.6km to the south west and 3 minutes later a 5.338ML aftershock. 2.84km to the south east, both ata depth of 5km.
During the 30 days following the 5.8 there were a total of 2706 aftershocks, 169 of them the same day, including 8 of the 12 light events between 4.044Ml and 4.928ML.
There were 138 minor aftershocks between 3.002ML and 3.998ML, 408 very-minor events from 2.001ML to 2.999ML, 1085 micro aftershocks between 1.000ML and 1.999ML and 1054 between 0.024ML and 0.999ML.

1989 Fiordland 6.1

On the 31st May 1989 at 05:54:23 UTC a 6.1ML (6.3Ms) (5.8MB) earthquake struck Fiordland 27km north west of Deep Cove and 7km south of the entrance to Doubtful Sound.
The quake was felt strongly in the southwestern part of the South Island. Also felt at Wellington.

The 6.1 1989 Doubtful Sound earthquake produced far fewer aftershocks than the 1993 6.7 Secretary Island earthquake, even when the smaller magnitude of the event is taken into account.
Only 82 aftershocks were recorded in the month following the mainshock.
The main aftershock zone lies within the entrance to Doubtful Sound, directly down-dip on the subducted plate from the Secretary Island earthquake aftershock zone.
The frequency of the aftershocks was unusual in that although there were 10 aftershocks between 2.957ML and 4.302ML in the first 9 hours, all offshore except the first aftershock, there was no activity at all for 24 hrs after that, then a single 3.6ML, 15.2km to the north west on the 2nd June, then quiet again for 11 hours when the aftershock sequence really started.
In the 30 days following the initial 6.1 earthquake there were
34 aftershocks between 2.123ML and 2.994ML
40 aftershocks between 3.006Ml and 3.933ML
and 8 aftershocks between 4.072ML and 4.587ML

This 1989 event appears to have triggered the 1993 Secretary Island event, in the sense that it moved it closer to failure.
It is possible that the 1989 earthquake was itself triggered. It occurred less than 8 days after the MW 8.2 Macquarie Ridge earthquake, which was located c. 800 km to the south. This was the largest earthquake to occur globally since 1977.

1988 Te Anau 6.1
The Te Anau, 1988, Mw 6.7 earthquake at a depth of 73 km was the first and deepest in a series of strong Fiordland earthquakes over the last 21 years, the others being the Doubtful Sound, 1989, Mw 6.4, depth 24 km; Secretary Island, 1993, Mw 6.8, depth 22 km; and the 2003 Secretary Island Mw 7.2, depth 24km .
Still earlier events in 1938, Mw 6.9, and 1943, Mw 6.2, were similar in depth and
mechanism to the 1988 Te Anau event.
This earthquake involved down-dip tearing of the subducted plate in the 40–80 km depth range.
The main shock at 6.078ML ( 6.7Mw) occured at 23:27:34.5 on the 3rd June on the Irene River which feeds into the northern Emelius Arm of Charles Sound. There were 304 recorded aftershocks over the next 30 days.
(At this time portable seismographs were not in use and there are no readings below 2.0ML)
There were;
168 aftershocks between 2.266ML and 2.987ML
125 aftershocks between 3.009ML and 3.99ML
9 aftershocks between 4.166ML and 4.778ML
A 5.227ML event occured within this period, 11 days later on the 14th June 15:43:11.5 UTC but it was 41km to the north north west, offshore George Sound and may not be directly related to the mainshock.

1987 Edgecumbe 6.1
The Edgecumbe earthquake occurred in New Zealand's Taupo Volcanic Zone, at the eastern side of the central volcanic region, at 01:42:35 UTC, March 2, 1987. This 10-km-deep Mw 6.5 (6.079ML) event was associated with surface rupture and regional deformation. Land-slides, liquefaction, compaction, and moderate to severe structural damage, especially at the towns of Edgecumbe, Te Teko, and Kawerau also occured. No deaths were directly attributed to the earthquake, and serious injuries were few owing to the largely rural nature of the region, The epicentre of the quake was approximately 2.24 kilometres (1.39 mi) south-south-east of the town of Matata, or 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) north-north-west of Edgecumbe. A 4.943ML foreshock just 7minutes before had cut the power supply and many people had moved away from heavy machinery and out of their houses.
The most affected region was the low-lying alluvial Rangi-taiki Plans, bounded by hilly terrain to the west, south, and east and by the Pacific Ocean to the north.
The most spectacular effect of the Edgecumbe earthquake was the 7-kilometre-long rift that appeared across the Rangitāiki Plains – the Edgecumbe Fault. A fissure up to 3 metres wide and 3–4 metres deep opened up along much of the fault, although some sections were marked just by zones of cracks.
Property damage was widespread in Edgecumbe and Kawerau.50 % of the houses in Edgecumbe were damaged. It was estimated that the Edgecumbe earthquake cost $300 million.
The quake was felt over most of the North Island, including Hamilton, Taupo, Napier and Gisborne.
To the end of March 1987 there were;
416 aftershocks between 2.172ML and 2.997ML
351 aftershocks between 3.001ML and 3.997ML
42 aftershocks between 4.014ML and 4.979ML (all but one within the first 24 hours after the main event)
The largest aftershock was a 5.567ML eight minutes after the 6.1ML
20 days after the 6.1, there was a second 6.133ML earthquake 80km to the north north west offshore at a depth of 359km, from which no aftershocks were recorded.

1984/5 Swarm in Bay of Plenty
A very large swarm occurred in Bay of Plenty, some 100 km to the north of the Bay of Plenty coast, at the south end of the Ngatoro Basin at the end of December 1984 and continued into January 1985.
The swarm commenced on Boxing Day 1984. Activity increased over the next few days and reached its maximum on 28 December. However, the largest event did not occur until 30 December. It had local magnitude ML 6.3 and, like the other events in the swarm, was listed in the New Zealand catalogue as a shallow event with nominal depth 12 km. Following the magnitude 6.3 event, activity decreased in a manner similar to that of a regular aftershock sequence. Altogether, the New Zealand catalogue lists some 1000 events with Mi > 3 associated with the swarm, making it the largest seismic episode recorded anywhere in New Zealand up to that time.
The Ngatoro Basin is a tensional feature, possibly a rift structure, and an entirely different tectonic environment to that of the submarine stratovolcanoes to the east. The Bay of Plenty swarm was preceded by the Edgecumbe earthquake (Mi = 6.4) on 8 March 1984, and was followed by numerous large events. These included a magnitude 7 event some 400 km to the northeast of East Cape on 26 September 1985. Smaller (magnitude 6) shallow events occurred on 7/11/1985, 2/3/1987, 8/8/1989, 22/3, 1990, and 28/3/1990. Intermediate depth events of similar magnitude occurred on 11/4/1985, 22/3/1987, 4/1/1988, 2, 4/1988, 17/4/1989, and 25/5/1989. Activity has continued to be high since then, with further major events in 1992, 1994, and 1995.

New Zealand Network Upgrade

The New Zealand catalogue is compiled by the New Zealand Seismological Observatory from data collected by the local New Zealand network.
Until the 1980s, much of the data from these stations was mailed to Wellington, where the hypocentre locations were calculated using a local velocity model and a New Zealand version of the local magnitude scale. In times of high seismic activity, the final hypocentral locations may not have been made for up to 6 months or longer. The catalogue is an accumulation of the lists put out in the Observatory's annual bulletins, which also report changes of instrumentation and coverage.

The PDE (Preliminary Determination of Epicentres) catalogue, compiled by United States National Earthquake Information Centre (NEIC), is derived from long-distance (teleseismic) records and also from readings from the local New Zealand network if these were available within the required time that the preliminary determination was to be made. In the earlier period covered by the
study, data from many of the stations within the local New Zealand network would not have been available to the NEIC in sufficient time.
Gradually, as electronic communications for the transmission of data became more common, both within New Zealand and between New Zealand and America, the NEIC gained access to data from a greater number of seismic stations within the New Zealand network within the required time.
In this sense, there were two major changes: about 1984 the forerunner of the Internet allowed the NEIC access to the New Zealand data at the Wellington Observatory; and from 1986 the New Zealand network was digitised and stations within the New Zealand network were telemetered to Wellington.

From 1984, there was a substantial increase in the number of tabulated PDE events in the New Zealand region. The reason for this is not completely clear, though the most likely hypothesis is that this date would roughly correspond to the start of electronic communications between New Zealand and America. From this point, the NEIC would have had more information from the New Zealand seismic network in time for use in their epicentral determination routines.
Before this, the information was sent by post, and would have arrived too late to be used in the NEIC determinations.

Inangahua Earthquake
Most of New Zealand felt the earthquake that struck the town of Inangahua in 1968. It was centred about 15 km north of Inangahua, but intensities of MM 4 and greater were recorded as far south as Otago and in almost all of the North Island, with the exception of areas in the north-east. Close to Inangahua, where intensities reached at least MM 10, the quake caused widespread destruction.
Fortunately, the area’s small population meant casualties were minor, but most structures, including wooden houses, roads and bridges, suffered extensive damage in the quake. Underground pipes broke under the strain, and railway lines twisted and buckled, derailing two trains. One hundred kilometres of track later had to be replaced.

The quake also triggered large landslides in the surrounding slopes, one of which claimed the lives of two people. At Whitecliffs a limestone bluff collapsed onto a farmhouse and pushed it downhill, killing one woman instantly and fatally injuring another. Shortly after the earthquake, one man died near Greymouth when his car hit a section of road that had subsided at a bridge approach. On the 30 May, two Post Office linemen involved in repairing lines brought down during the earthquake and the pilot of the Bell G2 helicopter they were in, were killed after the machine hit high voltage power lines in the Buller Gorge. The machine plummeted about 450 feet, crashing into the riverbank below before burning out completely.

Inangahua and Westport were evacuated when another massive slip dammed the Buller River, raising the river 30 m above its normal level, causing fears that a sudden failure of the dam would flood these downstream settlements. Due to the number of roads and bridges that had collapsed or been blocked in the quake, including the newly constructed Buller Gorge Highway, 235 people had to be airlifted to safety.

Over a 50-kilometre stretch, the road through Buller Gorge was blocked in more than 50 places, either buried under slips or with gaps where the road itself had fallen into the gorge. The earthquake had damaged or destroyed 50 bridges. It also derailed two goods trains, and over 100 kilometres of damaged railway track had to be re-laid.

Numerous aftershocks followed the quake, including 12 that were magnitude 5 or greater and occurred within a month of the initial shock. These early
aftershocks occurred within an elliptical area c. 45 km long by 25 km wide extending SSW of the mainshock epicentre.
A pilot of a rescue helicopter flying into the area reported seeing the ground moving in waves and opening up during one of these aftershocks. Over the next three years, they continued with 800 aftershocks over magnitude 3.8
